Millions of online users, to which many are referred to as ‘active participants’, jump on the bandwagon of sharing files across the internet, through the likes of music, games or software information (Peer-to-Peer File-Sharing and Copyright Infringement: Are You Vulnerable?). People are able to easily gain access to software, enabling them to build upon and share a wealth of information with others, ultimately increasing the power of “user control” (Free Culture: Creators).
It might sound tempting to then partake in file sharing or illegal downloading (File Sharing). Right?…Wrong. There are many ethical implications as a result of file sharing, for example downloading material that is protected by copyright laws.
Quality drama series, such as Game of Thrones, have proliferated, along with many file sharing services. In one instance, many Australian fans who were not subscribed to Foxtel services during the time the 4th seasoned aired, were unable to gain access to the show (SMH). As a result, in a time of frustration and annoyance, many viewers turned to various illegal file sharing sites (i.e. Pirate Bay) to watch the show.
Due to delayed Australian release dates, inflated prices and geo -blocks on content, consumers were attracted and lured to file sharing sites to access shows immediately. As a result of these types of behaviour, it is evident many people are not phased by the idea of potentially risking copyright infringements (SMH).
For many the concept of, “everyone else is doing it”, grants people the permission to engage in practices, such as file sharing and copyright, largely due to the internets “no barriers” and “free culture” position.

Your blog was really engaging with stellar memes!
I liked how you applied the concepts to examples like Game Of Thrones that everyone can relate to.
In terms of constructive criticism, maybe you include some sites at the end of your blog if people want to dive into some of the aspects into more detail or get more background info.

I am 110% guilty of doing a little bit of illegal downloading myself and the delayed release dates from the US kill me!
After this lecture I actually looked into how serious this offence is in terms of punishment and monitoring by the police and it turns out that Copyright Law is a federal issue and there are task forces within the AFPD that monitor our online usage and effectively will block certain websites from use within Australia depending on the amount of traffic they receive!
I can’t locate the exact legislation that I read at the time but this article sums up well the implications of the new bill on the our internet usage! http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2015/06/23/how-will-australias-anti-piracy-law-affect-you
Keep up the good work Britt! 🙂
